Fundraising talk for Frogmore Paper Mill where my novel The Paper Mill Girl was researched

Image
I'm doing a fundraising talk for Frogmore Paper Mill, the world's first mechanised paper mill, which has been devastated by fire.  They helped me SO MUCH with research for my novel The Paper Mill Girl. I spent two days there with their paper mill archivist.  My talk will be all about the amazing research I did for The Paper Mill Girl and the work of women in the papermills circa WW1.  See the blog post I wrote about my visit to Frogmore during the research for The Paper Mill Girl. The Paper Mill Girl is my bestselling novel so far. It was the book that propelled me into the bestselling top 50 chart... at number 49, for one week... but I'll take that happily! The talk includes a meal. ALL profits on books sold on the night will go to the rebuilding fund. I'll be happy to sign books too.  Date for your diary, Friday 10 November 2023 at 7pm.  All details at  https://www.frogmorepapermill.org.uk/event/talks-programme/ __ Glenda Young Twitter: @Flaming_Nora...

The Paper Mill Girl inspires more sewing artists

Image
Here is another incredible design inspired by my novel The Paper Mill Girl.   This design, still a work in progress, is being created by Allison Hicks who is a member of the United Together Book Club Sewing Group.  I feel very honoured that the sewing group are not only reading my novels but are creating such wonderful designs too. It's extremely moving for me to see these designs coming to life. Here's another design too which I posted last week. __ Glenda Young Author of Sagas & Cosy Crime novels, published by Headline Twitter: @Flaming_Nora Facebook: GlendaYoungAuthor

The Paper Mill girl inspires local sewing group

Image
A local book club have been reading my northeast saga novels.  They're now reading The Paper Mill Girl  and as well as the book club, have started a sewing group up too. The sewing group is called United Together Book Club Sewing Group    and they are creating designs inspired by  The Paper Mill Girl .   The image above shows a design by Anita Byron-Foster of the group, it's Ruth, Edie & Jane on the cliffs at Hendon beach.  (Shared with permission). I absolutely adore it!  __ Glenda Young Author of Sagas & Cosy Crime novels, published by Headline Twitter: @Flaming_Nora Facebook: GlendaYoungAuthor

The Paper Mill Girl in the Official UK Top 50 Bestselling Books

Image
I still can't quite believe this, but there it is, in black and white (and pink and yellow, courtesy of me!).  This is the page taken from this week's edition of The Bookseller magazine, printing the official UK top 50 bestselling books this week.   And there I am, with my novel The Paper Mill Girl  in at number 49. It's the first time I've ever been in the bestselling chart and I'm over the moon. __ Glenda Young Author of Sagas & Cosy Crime novels, published by Headline Twitter: @Flaming_Nora Facebook: GlendaYoungAuthor

Top 50 Bestseller - The Paper Mill Girl

Image
I'm overjoyed (and that's putting it mildly) to announce that my novel The Paper Mill Girl  has made it into the official UK Top 50 list of bestselling books. Okay, she's only at number 49, but she's made the list and I couldn't be more happy and proud. For the last few weeks, the book has been bubbling under the bestselling list in The Heatseeker's chart, for those authors (me) who haven't been in the main bestselling list before. She entered the Heatseekers chart at number 11, rose to number 3 and the following week was still there, hanging on in third place. And now this! She's made the leap from the Heatseekers chart to the main official UK top 50.  I am very happy indeed.  Thank you to everyone who has bought the book and enjoyed it. __ Glenda Young Author of Sagas & Cosy Crime novels, published by Headline Twitter: @Flaming_Nora Facebook: GlendaYoungAuthor

Holding her own! No. 3 in Heatseekers chart with The Paper Mill Girl

Image
Absolutely chuffed about this, pop-pickers!  My new novel THE PAPER MILL GIRL is a non-mover this week, remaining at number 3 in The Bookseller's Heatseekers Chart (for those bubbling under the top 50 bestsellers by authors who haven't been in the best selling chart before).  She entered the chart at number 11 to weeks ago... ...then last week went up to number 3... .. and this week, despite some very stiff competition from books written by celebrities with their own PR campaign (and I have none of this), she holds her own at the number three slot. Very happy indeed! __ Glenda Young Author of Sagas & Cosy Crime novels, published by Headline Twitter: @Flaming_Nora Facebook: GlendaYoungAuthor

In the saga genre, Glenda Young is a relative newcomer, but she has certainly made her mark - review by Karen's Book Blog

Image
Another wonderful review just in from Freelance book reviewer, Karen Byrom, at Karen's Book Blog. She says this about my new novel The Paper Mill Girl : "There are plenty top names in the saga genre, and Glenda Young is a relative newcomer, but she has certainly made her mark with her series of stand-alone stories set in the mining village of Ryhope in the North East of England. This story has all the ingredients any saga lover could wish for – poverty, hardship, illness, danger, and a baby who must be cared for at all costs. It’s action packed as Ruth careens from one challenge to the next. But there’s friendship, too, and romance of course While there’s plenty conflict to be resolved, it’s the characters that make this story truly thrilling. Not just trustworthy, responsible, loyal Ruth but her family, friends, employers and enemies are all fleshed into life. ... From Bea to Mick to Sarah, daughter of the factory owner –  they’re all convincing, empathetic characters with th...

Glenda Young has once again blown pre-conceived assumptions out of our minds like a gale swirling around the pier of Hendon Beach - review of The Paper Mill Girl

Image
This week, my new novel  The Paper Mill Girl  is on a "blog tour" where book bloggers receive the book from Headline in exchange for honest reviews on their own blogs.   Day 6 - the final day - of the blog tour was at Clyde's Corner where she leaves an amazing, detailed review about the book.  I particularly love the way this blogger knows where I'm coming from with sagas in that I never follow prescribed rules for the genre, but invent my own as I go along.  She says this about the book:  "... as with its equally exciting predecessors, Glenda Young has once again blown all of those pre-conceived assumptions out of our minds like a gale swirling around the pier of Hendon Beach with her latest novel ‘The Paper Mill Girl’, and its fiercely independent heroine Ruth Hardy. You can read it all here. Read more blog tour reviews of The Paper Mill Girl from  Ginger Book Geek  and  The Book Magnet  and  Bookish Jottings  and Bookie...

Characters that are so well developed. The book is superbly written - reviews for The Paper Mill Girl

Image
This week, my new novel  The Paper Mill Girl  is on a "blog tour" where book bloggers receive the book from Headline in exchange for honest reviews on their own blogs.   Day 4 of the blog tour was from Bookie Tracey on Instagram where she has written a wonderful review which includes:  "...  once again it was a great book.  I loved the main character in this book. The author always writes characters that are so well developed.  The book is superbly written. I love the setting as it’s close to where I grew up.  This book is emotional and so easy to read." My thanks to North East Business and Innovation Centre @northeastbic

Image
The website for the North East Business and Innovation Centre (NEBIC) says that it "provides office space and tailored business support services for businesses of all shapes and sizes."  What it doesn't tell you is that it has some of the most supportive and helpful people working there that you could ever wish to meet.   I first visited the NEBIC on a free, social media training course where I was learning how to use Twitter for business purposes. The receptionist recognised me, we'd worked together many years ago and I told her how useful I'd found the Twitter course. She recommended I speak to a member of staff at NEBIC as they'd be able to help me because I am self-employed.  "But I'm a writer!" I cried.  "It doesn't matter!" she replied. And so an appointment was made for me to meet with one of their advisors, a lady called Louise Hardy, who I am proud now to call my friend. Louise guided me through lots of publicity and public...
