Watch my Youtube talk for Gateshead Libraries #booktube

I've made another YouTube author talk, this time for Gateshead LIbraries who invited me to record an author talk to share on social media.

I was due to give some author talks at various libraries around the north east this spring and summer. However, as they've all been cancelled, it's a real honour (if slightly scary) to be doing the talks online instead.

Here's my talk today for Gateshead Libraries. I've subtitled it too and it's 15 minutes long.

Short Story in The People's Friend Special: Patching Things Up

Inspired by watching too many episodes of the wonderful telly show The Repair Shop, I wrote a short story called Patching Things Up.

It's a story about a family coping with grief and heartache... so why does a broken heirloom vase take centre stage?

The story is in The People's Friend monthly Special No. 192 in the shops today.

Short Story, The Honesty Box in The People's Friend magazine

I've a short story called The Honesty Box which is published in The People's Friend magazine, out in the shops today.

It's a story inspired by those honesty boxes you sometimes see at the bottom of a lane in the countryside, where farmers encourage you to take eggs, or fruit, and leave the money in the box. And I thought to myself... what if someone left a message in there?  I hope you enjoy the read.

Really, really happy this morning to find out that I've been longlisted in the Short Fiction Journal / University of Essex short story competition 2020.

They received over 800 entries of which 10 were longlisted (me included) and 10 were shortlisted (sadly me not included).

I can't reveal which story is mine at this stage, but all details of the competition are here.

Celebrating a special day with my first ever YouTube

Today is a special day. It's publication day for The Girl with the Scarlet Ribbon, my fourth novel. It's out now in ebook and audiobook and the paperback will be out in October 2020.

To celebrate, I put a pit a bit of lippy on and brushed my hair for the first time in weeks, set a camera up in the living room and plucked up the courage to record my first ever YouTube video.

It's a very short, just three and a half minutes, of me talking about my books and my writing life right now.

If you'd like to see it, it's here.

Why being compared to Catherine Cookson makes me nervous

A superb review for Pearl of Pit Lane in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. Thank you!

Mind you, it always makes me nervous when a review mentions the 'C' word - Catherine Cookson. Big shoes to fill and I don't intend to try.

I've only ever read one Catherine Cookson book in my life too, so I know the comparison can't be because I'm trying to write like one of the highest selling authors in the world. It comes, I feel, from writing about a pit village in the northeast and staying true to the dialogue, using the word 'mam' and never 'mum' and simply telling it as it is.

Stotty, Sagas and Radio 4 - My Writing Week

It's been quite a week.

I was interviewed on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour about my love of writing and my books. You can listen to the interview here and find out more.

Then my local paper The Sunderland Echo ran a feature on me and my books. You can read it here.

And then I very proudly revealed the cover to my novel number five, The Paper Mill Girl. You can see it in all its glory here.

Onward!  I might be under lockdown but I'm not keeping quiet. I've learned the hard way that if I don't blow my own trumpet no one else will.

It's hard work - very hard work - but I believe in my writing, my work and my books.

And now it's back to writing my current work in progress, the as-yet untitled novel six for Headline.

COVER REVEAL: The Paper Mill Girl

Very proud and happy today to reveal the cover of my fifth novel, The Paper Mill Girl. It'll be released in hardback, ebook and audiobook in November 2020 and in paperback in March next year.

And here it is printed on acetate and overlaid on the handmade sheet of paper I made when researching at Frogmore Mill in Apsley.

You can read all about my visit to Frogmore Mill here, it was fantastic!
