Hell is other people - and trolls, mainly trolls

I don't think I've felt so melancholy in a long time about doing something I love. Something I've been doing almost every single day for almost 10 years.  Those of you who know me can guess what it is.

The internet is wonderful.

The internet is horrible.

This week has been a horrible week.

I've had to delete troll comments, again.

And I've had to fend off the most disgusting homophobic rant received by email from someone in Canada. This person mistook corrie.net for the official ITV Coronation Street site. Corrie.net has, and always will have, the words 'fan website' on it at the top, in large letters. This person ignored that and took out their vitriol on me, a fan.

I receive homophobic, sexist and racist emails from Coronation Street 'fans' almost every day of the week, almost always from Canada.  I normally delete them without reply.  This week I replied, fed up to the back teeth of emails from bigots.

I'm a Coronation Street fan. I keep corrie.net and the Coronation Street Blog going and growing because I love writing about my favourite TV show.

99.9% of fellow fans who leave comments or send message to me are great.  It's that tiny percentage who really cut to the core with their bigotry and hatred.

I don't think I've felt so melancholy in a long time about doing something I love.

The Sound of Music

I have a short story in The People's Friend which is on sale today, Weds 24 August 2016.  My story has also made it to the front cover.  It's a story about a woman celebrating a milestone birthday by going on The Sound of Music tour in Salzburg.

The woman in the story isn't me. No, no, she's definitely not me.  I haven't got blonde hair.

Pedro Almodovar's new film, Julieta

To the flicks to see a preview screening of the new Pedro Almodovar film, Julieta.

I'm a big Pedro fan, it has to be said, and jumped at the chance of being one of the first to see his new film. It didn't disappoint.

It's a magnificent film that goes straight into my top 3 all-time favourite Almodovar films.

These are, if you're interested:

1. Volver
2. Julieta
3. Broken Embraces

Almodovar's signature flash of red appears often in the film, it's there at every turn.

At the end of the film, as the credits rolled and the music played, people stood up to leave and walk out. I was stuck in my seat from the emotion and drama, unable to move. How could these other cinema-goers just get up and go? Had they not been watching the same film that I had?

It's a truly magnificent film - emotional, involving, mature and grown-up.

Fortunately, my husband loves these films too. He even wrote a blog post about them.

Corrie on the wireless

This week I was interviewed, lived, on BBC Tees on the wireless.  I was there to talk about the new Coronation Street colouring book which I've written all the text for.

The talk turned to Coronation Street in general too, it's fun and there's a lot of laughter.

If you'd like to listen to it, I come in after 2 hours and 8 minutes and the interview is here.

It lasts an hour.

Putting it Together - a story of crazy golf

I've a short story in this week's The People's Friend magazine, on sale Weds 17 August 2016.

The story is called A Crazy Idea and it's about a woman who sets up her own crazy golf course on a patch of land she's been left in her uncle's will.

It's a fun story that I really enjoyed writing, especially with my passion for crazy golf that regular readers might already be aware of.

The very long longlist

I'm on cloud nine today, really over the moon.

Last night I found out that two short stories I'd entered into the Sunderland Short Story Award 2016 (in association with Waterstones) had both been longlisted.

Admittedly, it's a very long longlist with 87 stories on it.

But I've never been recognised for anything involving my fiction writing before, so you can imagine my excitement.

I've gone a bit giddy kipper.

As a non-fiction writer, I've only been trying my hand seriously at fiction over the last few months. I've had some success too, with stories accepted by The People's Friend magazine and Take A Break's Fiction Feast.

I might just celebrate with a beer tonight.

Coronation Street: The official colouring book will be on sale from September 22nd.

I'm honoured to have been asked to work with ITV on bringing the book to life.  Working with ITV I helped choose all 45 pictures for the book, writing descriptions of each of the key scenes and I also wrote the introduction.

Available in all good bookshops very soon indeed - and to order on Amazon.

My two short stories published today

I've two short stories published today.

The first story is in The People's Friend Special No. 127.  It's called When I'm Cleaning Windows - and I love it.  I had a lot of fun writing it.  Inspiration for the story came to me when I was actually doing housework (I never have my mind on the job, doing housework). When I was cleaning the windows I thought how odd that I'd rarely seen a woman window cleaner doing the rounds, they all seem to be fellas.  And then I thought ... what if I wrote a story about a woman window cleaner and all the things she saw through people's windows ...

And the second story published today is in this week's edition of The People's Friend magazine, on sale Weds 3 August.  It's a story called The Lemon Drizzle Cake.  Inspiration for this came from something very personal, a recipe handed down. I can't say any more otherwise I'll cry.
