I've two short stories published this week.  The first one, Paws for Thought , is about a couple who volunteer with the police force puppy development programme, and end up with more than they bargained for. With thanks to fellow writer Elaine Everest for alerting me to this little gem. The My Weekly   2019 Annual  is currently number eleven in the Sunday Times Best Selling Books list (of small publishers). This is great news for the team at D C Thomson who put the book together, and good news especially for the magazine's fiction editor Karen Byrom. And it's great news for all of us writers who are in the book too after having our stories chosen by Karen for inclusion. I'm very proud and happy to say that I've got two stories in the My Weekly 2019 Annual.  These are Garden of Eden  and The Queen of Cosy Crime .  The first was inspired by a certain TV gardener I'm rather fond of watching, ahem. And the second was inspired by a writing talk I went to where two crime novelists were interviewed on stage. Last night I was feeling down in the dumps. Don't know why ... I haven't felt that like in a very long time. I suspect it had something to do with the seven mile walk I'd done that day after cycling twenty miles the day before. I was tired and out of sorts. I went to bed early, fell asleep immediately, woke up this morning feeling brighter - and then bam! A smile appeared on my face like you've not seen before. Well, OK, maybe before. I've been longlisted in the Sunderland Short Story Award. I can't say which story is mine, however, as it's all anonymised. But I'm on the list. Fingers crossed for the shortlist. But even if my story doesn't go higher than the longlist, I'm well chuffed to get this far. My short story is one that was inspired by a visit to Killhope lead mining museum in County Durham. I've a short story called Tina the Taxi Driver which is published in The People's Friend magazine today.  Also in the magazine is another instalment of my weekly soap opera Riverside. The People's Friend are currently offering writing workshops, one in Dundee and one in York. If you're at all interested in writing for the magazine and learning the craft of writing short stories, I highly recommend this. I have two short stories out today.  One is in The People's Friend Fiction Special No. 135. It is called Ladies Only and is about a ladies only waiting room on a 1916 railway station. It was inspired by a writing day spent at Beamish Museum with their writer in residence. Also out today is A Good Match in The People's Friend weekly magazine - where my weekly soap opera Riverside appears also.  A Good Match was inspired by a true story I blogged about here. There's a new book published today, Monday October 31st.  It's a book called Wear'd Tales and it's a collection of supernatural stories about Sunderland based on myths and tales from the past. I have a short story included in this book. My story is based on the myth of The Ghostly Solider of Ryhope Village Green .  As I was born and bred and Ryhope this seemed the best tale for me to take and make a story out of. I've a short story in The People's Friend magazine which has gone on sale today.  The story's called Sunday Dinner and it's about what happens when a couple of empty nesters relish having the house to themselves - while their son goes off to University. It's been a week of two halves already - and it's only Wednesday. On Monday this week I found out that the short story I'd submitted to the Sunderland Short Story Award hadn't been shortlisted.  I had my pet lip out all day. And today I have two short stories published.  One is in The People's Friend magazine on sale today, Wednesday 14 September. It's a story called The Bicycle Belles. I've a short story in this week's The People's Friend magazine, on sale Weds 17 August 2016. The story is called A Crazy Idea and it's about a woman who sets up her own crazy golf course on a patch of land she's been left in her uncle's will.  It's a fun story that I really enjoyed writing, especially with my passion for crazy golf that regular readers might already be aware of. I've two short stories published today.  The first story is in The People's Friend Special No. 127 .  It's called When I'm Cleaning Windows - and I love it.  I had a lot of fun writing it.  Inspiration for the story came to me when I was actually doing housework (I never have my mind on the job, doing housework). When I was cleaning the windows I thought how odd that I'd rarely seen a woman window cleaner doing the rounds, they all seem to be fellas.  And then I thought ... what if I wrote a story about a woman window cleaner and all the things she saw through people's windows ... And the second story published today is in this week's edition of The People's Friend magazine , on sale Weds 3 August.  It's a story called The Lemon Drizzle Cake.   Inspiration for this came from something very personal, a recipe handed down.
