Community, reviews and sewing it up - my writing week

The best kind of post arrived this week, my author copies of the hardback version of my next northeast saga, The Miner's Lass. It's out in hardback, ebook and audiobook on May 11th and you can order it here.  I send my author copies of the book to friends and family who I know would like one, and I also gift them to those who have helped me with research. It's a cracker of a book!

I was very touched and moved this week to see one of the creative embroidery designs inspired by one of my books.  A local book club have been reading my northeast saga novels. They're currently reading The Paper Mill Girl and as well as the book club, have started a sewing group which meets online.

The sewing group is called United Together Book Club Sewing Group. The image below shows a design by Anita Byron-Foster of the group, it's Ruth, Edie & Jane on the cliffs at Hendon beach.  (Shared with permission). I absolutely adore it!

My northeast saga The Paper Mill Girl was given a glowing review in Living North magazine, which made me feel really chuffed. Thank you!

My novels were given a gorgeous, full-page advertisement in my local SR6 community magazine this week. I'm very happy with the way it looks and the people at SR6 magazine have been very supportive too.

Writing wise, I wrote the first 8,000 words of my second cosy crime set in Scarborough.  I'm off to a flying start and aim (hope!) to complete the first draft by mid July.

This week I renewed my membership of the Romantic Novelists' Association. My novels aren't romance books, the focus is always on the adventures of the determined young women at their core. But yes, romance might make its way into the story, although not too much, my novels are anything but soppy!

My novels had a really lovely little mention in my local newspaper, The Sunderland Echo, from the couple who run my local convenience store. You can read the full article here.
I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

See you next week!

The Paper Mill girl inspires local sewing group

A local book club have been reading my northeast saga novels.

They're now reading The Paper Mill Girl and as well as the book club, have started a sewing group up too.

The sewing group is called United Together Book Club Sewing Group  and they are creating designs inspired by The Paper Mill Girl.

Bestseller, cover reveal, libraries and Elvis - my writing week

I still can't quite believe this, but there it is below, in black and white (and pink and yellow, courtesy of me!).  This is the page taken from this week's edition of The Bookseller magazine, printing the official UK top 50 bestselling books this week.  And there I am, with my novel The Paper Mill Girl in at number 49. It's the first time I've ever been in the bestselling chart and I'm over the moon.

The news was picked up by my local newspaper, The Sunderland EchoYou can read the whole story here.

The amazing news was also picked up and reported in the MyNews magazine in Hertforshire, which is the area where I did a lot of the research for the book at Frogmore Mill, the world's first mechanised paper mill. You can read the full story here.

This week included World Book Night and in honour of the occasion I'm running a competition for you to win two signed copies of The Paper Mill Girl - one for you and one for a friend. It's running on my Facebook page until Sunday 25 April at 12 noon. Enter here!

Also this week I received the book cover for my debut cosy crime, Murder at the Seaview Hotel. It's about 12 Elvis impersonators (Twelvis), one is murdered and has his blue suede shoes stolen. Hotel landlady Helen Dexter and her trusty rescue greyhound Suki are on the case to solve the murder.  It's out in e-book, hardback, audio in Aug, paperback Nov.  What do you think of the cover? I LOVE it!

I even made a (very!) short video to whet your appetite for the book and you can view it below.

While I was making my very short videos, I also created one to tease you for the release of my next saga, The Miner's Lass and you can watch it below:

I've been plotting and planning my second cosy crime novel, and am ready to start writing it next week. Gulp.  That's my summer planned out, see you on the other side!

This week I ventured out to a community library called Back on the Map. It's in Hendon, Sunderland, and community libraries really are proving to be the lifeline to communities, now more than ever. I donated three of my novels in large print, one in audiobook and two in paperback.

On a bike ride this week I cycled past the National Glass Centre on the riverside in Sunderland and was over the moon to see my novels displayed in the window of the glass centre shop. The shop is currently open Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

See you next week!

Bestseller, Fairytales and Writer of the Week - my writing week

The big - nay, huge! - news this week is that my novel The Paper Mill Girl made it into the official UK top 50 bestseller list.  She's only just in there, debuting at number 49, but it's a huge milestone for me and my writing, the first time I've ever been in the main bestseller list. What an achievement for my little book!

Elsewhere this week I've been putting the final touches to the preparation for my second cosy crime set in Scarborough.  I've tested all of my research, character profiles, story arcs and plot against this great book called Wired for Story. I use it each time I write and before I begin planning my chapters. That's the next job which I'll do next week before I start writing at the end of this month. It's going to be a fun summer of writing my second cosy crime.

The second cosy crime will be called Set for Murder at the Seaview Hotel and features sleuth Helen Dexter, landlady of the Seaview hotel, with her trusty rescue greyhound Suki.  I've been finding out more about greyhounds to bring Suki to life even more in this book and went for a walk with a lady who rescues greyhounds.  That's me on the left in the purple coat and lilac hat.

Also this week I was Writer of the Week at The People's Friend magazine website. What a treat!  I talk about writing my weekly soap opera Riverside for the magazine each week and a little about my writing routine when I'm writing novels.  You can read it all here.

I also has a magical, contemporary, fairytale short story called Wishful Thinking published in The People's Friend magazine this week. It's a story which I wrote during last year's lockdown. You can find out all about it here.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

Short Story, Wishful Thinking in The People's Friend magazine

I've a fun short story called Wishful Thinking, in The People's Friend magazine, in the shops today.

It's a modern twist on a fairytale where a working, single mum is granted three wishes by her best friend.

Top 50 Bestseller - The Paper Mill Girl

I'm overjoyed (and that's putting it mildly) to announce that my novel The Paper Mill Girl has made it into the official UK Top 50 list of bestselling books.

Okay, she's only at number 49, but she's made the list and I couldn't be more happy and proud.

For the last few weeks, the book has been bubbling under the bestselling list in The Heatseeker's chart, for those authors (me) who haven't been in the main bestselling list before. She entered the Heatseekers chart at number 11, rose to number 3 and the following week was still there, hanging on in third place.

And now this! She's made the leap from the Heatseekers chart to the main official UK top 50.

I am very happy indeed.  Thank you to everyone who has bought the book and enjoyed it.

Writer of the Week at The People's Friend magazine

This week I'm writer of the week at The People's Friend magazine website. What a treat!

I talk about writing my weekly soap opera Riverside for the magazine each week and a little about my writing routine when I'm writing novels.

This week in the magazine, as well as my weekly soap opera Riverside, I've also got a magical, contemporary, fairytale short story called Three Wishes which I wrote during last year's lockdown.

Plotting and planning next cosy crime - my writing week

This week has meant a new start. It's the beginning of a month of research for my second cosy crime novel Set for Murder at the Seaview Hotel. It's the second in the series of Helen Dexter cosy crimes, she's a wonderful sleuth who runs a B&B in Scarborough.  The first in the series comes out in August this year and it's here.

Although I'm known as a saga writer and my sagas are hugely popular (thank you, everyone!), I'm writing sagas and cosy crimes alternatively now for the foreseeable future, which is great. It keeps the sagas fresh, new and exciting while I take time away from historical writing to have fun in a contemporary setting with my cosy crimes.

And so to this week, I've been researching. This has involved a flurry of phone calls to Scarborough and to friends in the northeast who are involved in something similar to the business in which the crime in my book is situated. I've been creating the structure of my novel in my mind, turning ideas over, dismissing some and adding others. I've made lists, wrote a one-page outline of the book including suspects, motive, red herrings, sub-plots and of course, lots of gentle humour too.

Next week I'll take the research one step further with a walk in the park with a greyhound. Intriguing, eh? And I'll create profiles for my characters before doing some reading about story structure to make sure I've covered all the bases in my novel. I need to be sure that what I plan to write contains all the twists and turns I want the reader to enjoy.

When all of that is done, I'll start typing up chapter outlines. These are loosely planned as my writing changes as I go, characters I never planned suddenly appear and the book takes on a life of its own. But it needs, for me, to have a structure to begin with, I can't sit down and stare at a blank screen, I'm no good like that.  And so I give myself lots of hints and clues as to where to begin telling my tale, where to make it rise and fall, turn up the tension, commit the crime, solve it satisfactorily and always get the reader involved.

Elswehere this week, I'm absolutely chuffed about this, pop-pickers! My new novel THE PAPER MILL GIRL is a non-mover this week, remaining at number 3 in The Bookseller's Heatseekers Chart (for those bubbling under the top 50 bestsellers by authors who haven't been in the best selling chart before). She entered the chart at number 11, then last week went up to number 3 and this week, despite some very stiff competition from books written by celebrities with their own PR campaign (and I have none of this apart from the wonderful assistance from Hype That PR, a fellow Sunderland lass and marketing professional), my book holds her own at the number three slot.

As a child, spending time in the library at Ryhope made me fall in love with books, stories and reading. It's what made me want to become a writer. With thanks to Ulverscroft for sending me my author copies of THE PAPER MILL GIRL this week in large print and audiobook! I've already donated these to one local community library, Fulwell Community Library and will donate more, when it's open again, to Back on the Map community library in Hendon.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.
