5 Locations in The Tuppenny Child

Image
Would you like to know more about the locations I use in my novels? I hope that if you read the book, or if you've read it already, that these pictures might give some context and background and add a bit of depth to the locations I've written about. The Tuppenny Child is available now in paperback, hardback, e-book and audiobook and  you can buy it here Here we go with my top 5 favourite locations in  The Tuppenny Child      Ryhope East Railway Station Ryhope used to have two railway stations; Ryhope and Ryhope East. And it's the railway that brings the heroine of  The Tuppenny Child  to Ryhope. Sadie Linthorpe escapes a violent life in Hartlepool and arrives at Ryhope East train station alone, with no money. She knows no-one in the village. It's pouring down with rain when she arrives... and her new life and adventure begins. The Railway Inn The Railway Inn is one of two Ryhope pubs that feature in  The Tuppenny Child . ...

The Irish Women’s Christmas #NollaignamBan

Image
Before writing my novels I always set aside two or three weeks of dedicated research. I visit museums and libraries, archives and records offices and most importantly of all, I walk around Ryhope with my ‘writing head on’. I try to look at the buildings and roads and imagine them as they might have been a hundred years ago. I peer over doorways, walk down cobbled lanes and breathe in the sea air. I imagine alighting from a train at what is left of one of the two train stations and try to catch a glimpse of old Ryhope through a fresh pair of eyes. It was while researching for The Tuppenny Child , that I learned of something new and unusual. But it wasn’t something I discovered in a museum or old book, it was something I read, of all places, on Twitter! My friend Emma lives in Dublin and on January 6 2018 she tweeted this. I am copying it below with Emma’s permission: We’re celebrating #NollaignamBan (Women's Christmas) today i n Ireland. Traditionally a day when men would t...

Snuggle up with a Saga

Image
A lovely review of The Tuppenny Child today in Frost Magazine who says:  "Snuggle up with a Saga. Another heart-warming saga from the author of Belle of the Back Streets. Warm-hearted characters on every page and a fine attention to period detail sweep you away with Sadie as she sets out to find her child." You can read all of the press and publicity for my books here. __ Glenda Young Author of historical novels with Headline Twitter:  @Flaming_Nora Facebook:  GlendaYoungAuthor

The Tuppenny Child in the Bookseller Heatseekers Chart

Image
The Bookseller is the trade journal for book sellers and authors. They compile the best selling charts each week.  Well, one of those charts has The Tuppenny Child featured in it.  The Bookseller's Heatseekers charts are compiled using titles by authors who have not appeared in the official UK Top 50 since Neilsen Bookscan records began. As such, they reveal books that are selling well, but not well enough to make the overall list in a seven day period. And here she is, my very own The Tuppenny Child, straight in the Heatseekers chart at number eight this week. This is very good news indeed. __ Glenda Young Author of historical novels with Headline Twitter:  @Flaming_Nora Facebook:  GlendaYoungAuthor

Publication day for The Tuppenny Child

Image
It's publication day for the paperback of my second novel - The Tuppenny Child - published by Headline. The Tuppenny Child is set in the northeast coalmining village of Ryhope, in 1919. It's got a fantastic heroine at its core, who arrives in Ryhope with no money, no friends, no family. She is there to find her baby who has been stolen from her.  And she's a kick-ass feminist icon too. She becomes the first woman in the village to wear trousers, to ride a bike, to set up her own business - and all the while she's searching for her stolen child.  Not just that, she brings down one of the most powerful men in the village while she's on.  It's a rollercoaster of a ride and includes a fantastic Women's Christmas, the traditional Irish custom of  Nollaig na mBan, done in pure Ryhope style. As in my debut novel  BELLE OF THE BACK STREETS , there's another feisty heroine at the core of The Tuppenny Child  and it's available here. -...

Are sagas a feminist issue? Hell, yeah.

Image
Today, Friday 14 June, I'm featured on the Romantic Novelists' Association blog asking Are Sagas a Feminist Issue? .  The answer of course, is yes. What book written around a strong, independent heroine couldn't be? I also chat about the research for the story of The Tuppenny Child. The story takes place in the northeast pit village of Ryhope, where I grew up and I talk about setting the story there too. You can read it all here , if you'd like to. Putting Sunderland on the map

Image
I studied at the University of Sunderland as a mature student, taking a journalism degree course some years ago. And since I've left Uni, I find myself drawn back there more than ever now that I've become a writer. And yes, it still feels odd to say that about myself. As an alumni member of the University, I'm allowed to use the library facilities and have been spending a great deal of time there researching and writing my historical novels set in Sunderland in 1919. The Murray library at the University is the place where I also plan out my novels, spreading A4 sheets, folders and files all over a massive table, the likes of which I need and don't have at home.  And it's as a thank you to the University and the alumni association that I have written a few words about them in an interview with the University on the publication of the hardback of my second novel The Tuppenny Child.
