My interview on BBC Radio York with Bek by the Sea

My new novel The Girl with the Scarlet Ribbon is set between the northeast and Scarborough in 1919.

And I had the pleasure of speaking to Twitter friend Bek by the Sea for her radio show on BBC York this week all about the Scarborough elements of the book.

If you'd like to listen to it, it's here and I start speaking at 44 mins in.

It's available on the BBC Sounds app for 29 days from September 28, 2020.

Sunderland's best selling local author

Today I was invited into my local branch of Waterstones book shop in The Bridges shopping centre in Sunderland. I was there, not for a book signing this time, as book signings are a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic this year and none are taking place.

Instead, I went into sign books for the shelves.

Books? Check. Pen? Check. Hand sanitiser? Mask? Check and check.  All books signed, all done and dusted and I was on my way out of the shop when I saw the last two books on a table directly in front of the bookshop door, it's the first thing customers see on their way into the shop.

On it, the lovely staff at Waterstones had printed 'Sunderland's best selling local author' and I had to take a a photo, of course!  As I was doing so, a lady came up to me to ask me about the book. We had a socially distanced chat through masks (!) and she bought a book which I happily signed for her.

Oh, and I'm in the window next to Barack Obama. Not bad for a lass from a pit village.

And I'm pleased to say I was interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle this morning talking to their DJ Gilly Hope all about my new novel The Girl with the Scarlet Ribbon.

I also talk about how I moved into the world of being a writer, about researching during a pandemic and why eavesdropping on the bus is always a good idea.

You can listen to my interview at BBC Sounds where I start talking at 1hr 13 and again at 1hr 40.  Enjoy!

It's available here.

The Miner's Lass

I'm very happy to reveal the title and details of my sixth saga set in Ryhope in 1919.

THE MINER'S LASS will be released by Headline in ebook and hardback in May 2021 and in paperback in November 2021.

It features perhaps the most innocent of all my heroines so far, Ruby Dinsdale, who is a plucky young lass who gets her heart broken in the worst possible way. There's family, feuding and fighting in this book along with mental health issues and the Sunderland Borough Lunatic Asylum. As always with my books, it's a very dramatic read that cracks along at a fast pace.

You can find out more about it and even pre-order if you'd like to - click here.
