Book 2 and Bowie

Today, I start writing my second novel.  Planning has been done. Character lists have been drawn up. A map of Ryhope village in 1920 is pinned in front of me. Pictures and photographs have been dotted above my writing desk. Behind me, not pictured, are files of research with more pictures, maps and plans.

I have no more excuses, no more reasons not to write, to begin, to start a new story. I will bring characters to life, take them from my head and set them down in print. They do not yet know they are going to exist. But they will... and they will live and they will love. They will dance and they will sing.

And so, here I go. Twitter has been shut down. Facebook has closed. Email is on mute for the next few hours, because today I begin writing book two. And my work will be watched over, as it always is, by David Bowie, the creative genius who has spurred me on every single day since I was 11 years old.

Planning and Plotting for Novel 2

Today has been spent in the library at the University of Sunderland.

I was a student there, a mature student, doing my degree in Journalism. And I've worked at the University, too.  So I know how wonderful the Sunderland Uni library space is for thinking, for dreaming, for planning, for working.

And as an alumnus member of the University and of the library, I get to use the incredible facilities there.

So today, I bundled up my bag of notes, notepad, pens and reading specs and spent a wonderful afternoon planning out my second novel.

Planning is the fun part... later this week the hard work begins when writing starts in earnest again.

And I couldn't be happier.

Help! My Husband's a Hipster

I've two short stories today in The People's Friend Special No. 152 which is in the shops today.  Both stories are funny ones.

The first is Help! My Husband's a Hipster and the second is called Mixed Signals.

Both stories made me laugh out loud when I wrote them, which is always a good sign!

I am very proud to announce that I've made the list of 16 winning stories in the Fahrenheit Press short story competition.

This means that my story - The Canary Islands Crime Boss - will be printed in Noirville, the first ever short story anthology by Fahrenheit Press.

I couldn't be more happy and I'll be sure to announce when Noirville is available to buy.

Revenge in the Launderette

I've got a short story in Take a Break's Fiction Feast (February 2018) which has gone on sale in the shops today, Thursday 4 January 2018.

It's called "It'll All Come Out in the Wash" and it's about a woman scorned who takes her revenge... in a launderette.  It was a lot of fun to write, being a conversation between two women in a launderette. I think that writing dialogue is my most favourite thing to do.
