Video review, Murder at the Seaview Hotel: "It's a love letter to Scarborough" say Pumping Marvellous heart charity

My cosy crime set in Scarborough, Murder at the Seaview Hotel was given a sterling review live on Facebook from the book club for Pumping Marvellous, the heart failure charity. You can watch Gary and Sarah chat about and review the book online here.

Here's just a snippet of some of their wonderful comments as they really enjoyed the book. "It's a love story to Scarborough. Clever, funny and gentle. Twelvis are brilliant. I absolutely loved it. It made me laugh out loud. Yes, someone gets murdered but it's still a feel good read with dark humour."

The verdict is in! What did Crime Fiction Lover make of my cosy crime?

When a prestigious crime fiction website offers to review your novel, it's a nail-biting experience waiting for their verdict on your precious work.

I must admit I was nervous. Would Murder at the Seaview Hotel be too cosy for their liking, too twee? Too funny? Not enough blood, guts and gore?

Well, I needn't have worried.

The book was not only well received by the site, but given a sterling 5 star review and they even said this about it too:

Author Glenda Young has a lightness of touch worthy of a master baker award as she melds together a tale that is both laugh-out-loud funny and lump-in-the throat sad. Her depiction of a woman deep in grief could be cloying, but instead it is poignant and rings true. The downbeat moments are tempered by the fun of the Elvises – including Helen, acting as a last-minute stand-in called Helvis and providing one of the highlights in a book that is a pleasure to read.

Thank you, Crime Fiction Lover!

Like a kid on Christmas Day - What a writer really gets up to on publication day

Thursday 5 August 2021 is publication day for my debut cosy crime novel, Murder at the Seaview Hotel. It's now available in ebook, hardback and audio, published by Headline, and in paperback in November 2021.

What's it about? When a troupe of 12 Elvis impersonators (Twelvis) arrive for an Elvis convention in Scarborough, one of them is found dead and his blue suede shoes are stolen. B&B landlady Helen Dexter and her rescue greyhound Suki are on the case to uncover the killer.

So what exactly does a writer get up to on publication day?

Well, here's how it played out for me...

Woke at 5am like a kid on Christmas morning. Social media was abuzz and I felt loved. Ate breakfast. Read amazing reviews and congratulatory emails. Showered with a smile. Went for early morning walk along the beach and filled a full bin-bag with plastic washed up on the strandline. Felt virtuous. Read an interview I did for Shots Blog. Felt professional. Treated myself to mid-morning snack of hot buttered crumpets, threw in smoked salmon, just because. Felt on top of the world. Cleaned the bathroom, well, it was Thursday and Thursday is bathroom cleaning day. Brought myself down to earth. Walked to the post office to send review copies and complimentary copies of the book to those who helped with research or are helping me with publicity. Yes, I have to do all of this myself. Reality checked myself. Returned home to find social media still abuzz. Ate lunch, nothing special, just a sandwich. Changed into decent clothes, put some make-up on, brushed my hair. For third time today, left the house. This time I joined readers of my books for a garden party - purely coincidental this was held on publication day. Felt a bit anxious as I don't know them and I'm not good in groups. Took three of my saga novels to give away in a raffle. Needn't have worried, everyone was lovely. Sat next to my cousin I haven't seen in 12 years. Talked a lot. Ate cake, drank tea, had a smashing time, signed raffle winners' books. Returned home to find a bouquet delivered from my publisher, Headline. Read a blog post I wrote for Bookish Jottings. Felt a bit bloody special. Worn out.

All shook up! Featured in the Crime Readers' Association newsletter

I'm all shook up about this!

Featured in the Crime Readers' Association newsletter for August 2021.

My debut cosy crime Murder at the Seaview Hotel.

Cosy Crime Featuring 12 Elvis Impersonators Will Leave You All Shook Up!

Glenda Young

My debut cosy crime, Murder at the Seaview Hotel, is released by Headline in August 2021 in ebook, hardback and audiobook, with the paperback in November. It’s set in Yorkshire, in the seaside town of Scarborough, and stars a troupe of twelve Elvis impersonators called Twelvis. They arrive at the Seaview Hotel for an Elvis fan convention but their story takes a dark turn when one of the Elvis impersonators is murdered and his blue suede shoes are stolen. Hotel landlady Helen Dexter and her rescue greyhound Suki are soon on the case to solve the murder. Murder at the Seaview Hotel is the first in a series of three cosy crimes starring Helen Dexter and Suki and set in the Seaview Hotel.

Cosy crimes are all about sleuthing, strong characters, mystery, suspects and a wealth of red herrings. And in Murder at the Seaview Hotel, it’s also about Elvis impersonators and their quivering top lips, white-suited shaking hips, diamanté, collars and big-buckle belts.

So, why did I choose Elvis and why set it in Scarborough? Well, who doesn’t love Elvis or know at least one of his songs? And I chose Scarborough as the setting because I adore the seaside town; it’s my happy place and I was married there.

Murder at the Seaview Hotel was a lot of fun to write and you can even sing along! While writing the book I listened to a different Elvis song each day to get me in the right mood for creating Twelvis. I’ve now curated a playlist to sing along as you read and you can download the playlist at Spotify http://bit.ly/MurderAtTheSeaviewHotelSpotify or YouTube http://bit.ly/MurderAtTheSeaviewHotelYouTube.

Ladies-and-gentlemen, thankyouverymuch. Glenda Young has now left this article.

Murder at the Seaview Hotel is out on 5 August. You can find out more about Glenda and her writing here.
