The rose garden scene from Murder at the Seaview Hotel

South Cliff Gardens in Scarborough hold a very special place in my heart. Readers of my cosy crime books (and everyone who knows me) will know how special Scarborough is. It's my happy place, always has been and I hope always will. I was even married there too.

In the South Cliff Gardens there's a gorgeous rose garden which plays a pivotal scene in my debut cosy crime Murder at the Seaview Hotel.  In my second cosy crime, out next year, the Italian gardens in South Cliff Gardens plays another pivotal, wonderful role too.

South Cliff Gardens are currently undergoing major renovation after heavy investment. I've teamed up with them to write a blog post which you can read on their website. It's here.

And if you've got fond memories of South Cliff Gardens, join in with their postcard project too.

Shirley, Spark, Sagas and Soap - my writing week

This week has been a rather difficult week. I've been working very hard on editing my second cosy crime set in Scarborough, Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel. It's going well, but slowly, and needs a great deal of concentration... which is somewhat hard when the builders are in the house. I'm trying my best, however.

Elsewhere, this week, a FREE copy of The People’s Friend magazine was given away with Saturday’s Daily Mirror and Daily Express. The magazine has loads of feel-good fiction, fascinating features and contained a smashing episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside too!  All details here.

Spark FM is the award-winning radio station produced and run by students at Sunderland University. As a (very) mature student alumni of Sunderland University, I was invited onto the show on Saturday 18 September to give some advice to freshers. In a nutshell, I said to enjoy every minute and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. You can listen to my interview on Spark's website https://www.sparksunderland.com/listenagain/ where I should be on the first page of listen again. It may show up as 'Spark Daytime' 12pm. You can skim through the hour or listen to the whole thing - my interview is about halfway through.

I'm LOVING my half-page ad and details of my talk for this year's Houghton Feast.  All are welcome to my online zoom talk about my new saga THE MINER'S LASS on Oct 13 as part of Houghton Feast - all details at http://www.houghtonfeast.co.uk/ - Details of all my upcoming talks are here.

A reminder that the competition to win your name as a character in my cosy crime Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel ends on September 30.  Enter the competition here.

And a reminder that the competition to win a signed copy of Belle of the Back Streets, with chocolate and bookmarks, ends on September 28th 2021 at 12 noon.  Enter the competition here.

Thank heavens for some light relief this week in the shape of Strictly Come Dancing. I love the show and am reading Shirley Ballas' book.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

See you next week!

Builders, beach and bears - my writing week

This week I began editing my second cosy crime novel, Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel. The edits I'm doing are the really difficult ones, the structural edits, which have been sent to me from the publisher. They suggest where the story might need changing around, where tension needs to be ramped up or more drama added, that kind of thing. While I don't have to agree with everything the publisher suggests, I think I'd be daft to ignore their advice.  However, if there's something in the story that I've written that they suggest that I change and I feel strongly it should stay the same, then it will.  As we have the builders in our home this week I took my editing to the beach, away from the builders' noise.

I was over the moon to find out I'm on the front cover of this year's Houghton Feast brochure and on the posters too. I'm on the left hand side, in the white blouse, holding a copy of my newest saga set in the northeast pit villages of 1919. It's called The Miner's Lass.   I'll be giving an online talk all about the book as part of Houghton Feast. It's free, please come. All details here.

I sent out my September newsletter with all kinds of wonderful stuff and details of how YOU can be a character in my next cosy crime. Read the newsletter online here  or sign up to receive once a month by email here.

I gave an online talk by Zoom to the Friends of Whitburn Library. This was really good fun. To see my upcoming author talks and events, have a look here.

I was very proud to take part in Heritage Open Days (Sep 10-13) with a free, virtual walk around old Ryhope village. All details here.

I'm very happy to be supporting this year's Children In Read where you can win a signed copy of my novel THE PAPER MILL GIRL in the Authors' & Illustrators' Auction for The BBC Children in Need Appeal. Bid to win the signed book here.

I ran a competition to win a signed copy of my novel BELLE OF THE BACK STREETS, a gorgeous bar of chocolate and free bookmarks. Enter at the pinned post on my Facebook page and it ends Tues Sep 28th 2021 at 12 noon.

Really happy to have my debut cosy crime MURDER AT THE SEAVIEW HOTEL included in this list of great books set in and around hotels!  Read it all here. And you can buy it now from bit.ly/MurderAtTheSeaviewHotel

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera
Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.
