Cover reveal: The Girl with the Scarlet Ribbon

Image
Very proud and happy to be able to reveal the cover of my fourth novel, The Girl with the Scarlet Ribbon.  I know I shouldn't have favourite books, it's like having a favourite child, but I think this book is my favourite so far - not least because it's set in my favourite place! The story is set between Ryhope and Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast.  When a newborn baby girl is found abandoned with nothing but a scarlet ribbon tied to her basket, Ava Davidson, housekeeper of the wealthy McNally family's home, the Uplands, takes her into her care. Sworn to secrecy about the baby's true identity, Ada names her Jess and brings her up as her own, giving Jess no reason to question where she came from. My Top 10 Writing Highlights of 2019 - Day 10 of 10

This year has been a blur of good stuff, exciting times and unbelievable things. And so before the year ends I want to take a look back at my year in writing and highlight some of the incredible experiences I've had.  Over ten days from Tuesday 10 December to Thursday 19 December, I'll be posting a blog about one particular writing event which happened this year that really made me smile, feel proud or honoured.  This isn't a countdown with my favourite at number one. This is me remembering the amazing events of 2019 in my writing life, in no particular order. And so without any further ado, here we go with day 10 of 10. Day 10 of 10 September 2019 Margaret Atwood is my all-time favourite author, ever and The Handmaid's Tale my favourite book. When the follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale was released, The Testaments, I devoured every word. And when I saw my second novel The Tuppenny Child, in the window at Waterstone's Sunderland, sitting in the wind...

Writing short stories, soap opera and a comedy sketch

Image
Just been doing a bit of year-end totting up and sorting out.  And am very happy to share the news that during 2019 I had a whopping 29 short stories published in women's magazines.   This includes stories published in  The People's Friend and The People's Friend Fiction Special ; My Weekly and Take a Break's Fiction Feast. Overseas in South Africa I had stories published in You magazine too. These stories published in UK women's magazines included my  story  Butterflies  published in  My Weekly. Butterflies  was a first for women’s magazine fiction in the UK – a love story featuring two women. My weekly soap opera Riverside  continues apace in The People's Friend magazine and remains the highlight of my writing week. I LOVE writing Riverside! In addition to all of that I had a little bit of success in writing competitions. My short story The Elvis Twins won third place (regional) in the Sunderland Short Story Aw...
