5 Locations in The Sixpenny Orphan

Image
Would you like to know more about the locations I use in my novels?  I hope that if you read the book, or if you've read it already, that these pictures might give some context and background and add a bit of depth to the locations I've written about. The Sixpenny Orphan  is available now in hardback, e-book and audiobook.  You can buy it here.    It comes out in paperback in May 2023. The book is about two orphan sisters torn apart in tragic events. Ten years later they reunite but they lives are drastically different.  The top 5 locations in this book are as follows: 1. The shop on the village green .  This is where my heroine Poppy works and where jam tarts are baked, to a secret family recipe.  This gorgeous picture of what was a cafe originally on the village green inspired the shop in my novel. 2. Bellevue House on Gray Road in Sunderland . This plays a pivotal role when Poppy finds her sister Rose after ten years apart. 3. The farming commu...

Waterstones, writing, heritage and history - my writing week

Image
This week I've been carrying on writing my novel The Toffee Factory Girls  and really enjoying it. I'm well past the halfway mark - the point of no return - and will crack on and get my head down over the coming weeks to finish my first draft. Elsewhere this week I ventured into Sunderland Waterstones where they have a table full of my books, sagas on one side and cosy crimes on the other. I signed the pile of books so they have lots of signed copies now! Also this week I gave a talk to Hendon History Group in Sunderland, which went great. I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera  Riverside  for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing  Riverside  weekly since 2016 and you can  find out all about it here. I also kept the  Coronation Street Blog  ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.  See you next week! __ Glenda Young Twitter: @Flaming_Nora Facebook: GlendaYoungAuthor Website: GlendaYoungBook...

Halfway there, Halifax and Warm Spaces - my writing week

Image
This week I've been carrying on writing my novel The Toffee Factory Girls and am almost at the half way point of the first draft. There's still a very long way to go. I was featured in the Sheffield Star newspaper about my research into the history of women making toffee. You can read the full article here. The story also was featured in The Halifax Courier newspaper. You can read it here . I was invited to give the monthly talk to Sunderland Antiquarian society. The title was "Writing Historical Novels set in Old Ryhope."  It was my biggest audience yet, a hall full of people interested in the heritage and history of Sunderland. I sold a lot of books and the reception was amazing.  Thank you to everyone who came. I received new bookmarks, printed by local firm Print2GoGo. Each time an author's books are taken out on loan from a library, we receive a small payment through the British Library's Public Lending Rights. This year's statement arrived this week...

In my happy place - my writing week

Image
This week I'm in my happy place of Scarborough, but I'm not here on holiday, I'm here to work.  It's been a very busy work and it's not over yet.  So let's have a look at what I've been up to. First of all, let's take a minute to appreciate the beauty of my saga book covers, all together as one. Stunning. And take a moment too to remember the Irish tradition of Nollaig na mBan, the Woman's Christmas. My novel A Mother's Christmas Wish celebrates this amazing tradition. It takes place on January 6 each year and it was my Dublin friend Emma Hynes who told me about it. I was so captured by it that I knew I had to write about it. Elsewhere this week, I'm chuffed to report that my cosy crime novel Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel has been nominated by my publisher Headline in the Last Laugh award for best humourus crime novel in this year's CrimeFest!  All the nominations are here. Speaking of my cosy crime novels set in Scarborough, I called...

History in the making, going meta - my writing week

Image
This week I've taken myself away from the room in my house where I usually write. For one day per week until I've finished the first draft of my current novel - The Toffee Factory Girls - I'm writing in the historic River Wear Commissioners' Office in Sunderland. (It's not as expensive as you might think to hire an office by the day!).  I've included this building in many of my past novels, so to be here writing is quite amazing. A bit meta, and odd, but great! This week my novel The Paper Mill Girl has gone on 99p offer for Kindle at Amazon. It'll last until the end of January and you can buy it cheap at bit.ly/PaperMillGirl I can finally reveal the cover of my new saga The Sixpenny Orphan.  The book is about two orphan sisters who are torn apart by tragic events. Years later they reunite, but their lives have drastically changed. It's a cracking read! Out in ebook, hardback and audiobook on February 16 2023 and in paperback on May 11. Pre-order now at ...
