Coronation Street, Scarborough Spy, Sunderland History - My Writing Week

I've signed up to join the Jesmond Library Readathon and I'll be reading at 2pm on Friday June 26 from my book Murder at the Seaview Hotel. All welcome, it's free, donations welcome too for the library.


My book launch for Celebrations at the Toffee Factory continues on Saturday 6 June at The Lambton on Front Street in Chester-le-Street. All welcome, it's free and part of a three day exhibition by Chester-le-Street heritage group.  



I'll be doing talks at Scarborough Library AND Filey Library on Wednesday 24 June.  All welcome, they're free.  I was featured in The Scarborough News too.


And I had a wonderful day at Sunderland History Fair where I was officially invited to open the fair and met hundreds of readers and it was just the BEST day!



My Coronation Street fan books were spotted in the shop on the Corrie tour and sent to me by a fan. Thank you!

Another guided walk of Ryhope showing locations from my books has been arranged for Saturday 27 June by Ian Mole.  Book your place now at the Facebook group.


And I'm giving a talk on my toffee factory girls series of books at Ryhope Heritage Society on Tuesday 9 June. Admission is £3 which includes refreshments. I'm speaking after Dorothy Hall's main speech about the toffee factory in Chester-le-Street.

My talk at Durham Clayport Library is now available to book. It's free but places must be booked.  See details on the poster below and I hope to see you there!


And my two talks at Scarborough library and Filey Library on Weds June 24 were included in the latest edition of the fab Scarborough Spy magazine. 


I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016.

Clippy Mat Making at Beamish

Researching for my novel Pearl of Pit Lane I spent the day at Beamish Museum on a clippy mat workshop. And if you're wondering what a clippy mat is, it's also known as a proggy mat or a rag rug. The BBC puts it like this: Proggy mats were a common sight in working-class homes in the North East of England until the mid-20th Century. Made from old sacks and recycled fabric they were an economical option to keep feet warm and toasty in an era before fitted carpets were the norm. I remember my grandma had proggy mats in her house and I also remember her making them, but I was never interested back then in learning how to make my own. As Ione of my characters in my novel makes proggy mats, I could have read about how to make them or even watched on YouTube, I wanted to discover for myself what the process felt like, smelt like, sounded like. And so I booked myself on to a workshop at Beamish Museum, a place I love to visit. There were six of us on the proggy mat workshop...
