Nominations, submissions and a return to my past - my writing week

This week I pressed SEND on my new 1919 saga set in the northeast village of Ryhope. It's another lovely book that made me cry at the end every single time I read it (and when you're editing, you have to read your work a lot!).  It's packed with emotion and not one, but two heroines, and that's all I can say for now.  I'm now taking the rest of this month, and March "off" to allow the creative well in my mind to refill.

I gave a talk this week to Creative and Professional Writing students at the University of Sunderland. As part of their course they have publishers and agents coming into to speak to them and authors too. I was honoured to be asked and it was an absolute delight to speak to the students.

I'm over the moon to say I've been nominated three times in the prestigious Crime Fest awards for Murder at the Seaview Hotel in the categories of THE LAST LAUGH for best 2021 humorous crime novel, AUDIBLE SOUNDS OF CRIME AWARD for best 2021 unabridged crime audiobook &  eDUNNIT AWARD for best 2021 crime ebook! All of the nominations are here. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I've a fun short story in Best magazine in the shops today. It's about a cat who has two owners. However, the owners think the cat is being exclusive to them.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

Congratulations and celebrations - my writing week

This week I finished writing my new saga novel set in 1919. All done and dusted... sort of. Going to let it sit for a week while I mull it all over before giving it one final edit and then off it goes to the publisher. And yes, I celebrated!

This week I was very happy to see my second fun, cosy crime novel set in Scarborough, Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel  previewed in this week's Bookseller magazineIt is published by Headline out in May 2021 in hardback, ebook and audiobook and in August in paperback.  You can order it here.

The blurb for the book in the Bookseller doesn't say a lot, as it's limited by space. But let me tell you, murder mystery fans, that it's a rollercoaster of a ride. The stage is set for murder at Helen Dexter's Seaview Hotel in Scarborough when a troupe of actors arrive and take over the hotel for two weeks. The leading lady is a diva, the local theatre is reliant on their play to survive, and there's a lot at stake. So when one of the cast is murdered, the spotlight falls once again on Helen Dexter, her greyhound Suki and the staff at the Seaview Hotel. The novel is the second in The Seaview Hotel series, but you can read these books in any order as standalone books too. I hope you really enjoy it.

I've been invited to give an illustrated talk on my novels in the village they're set in, Ryhope on the northeast coast. Ryhope Heritage Society have invited me to speak on Tuesday June at 1.30pm. All welcome.  Details below.  If you'd like to see all of my talks and events, they're here.

WELL... this is very big news that I can finally announce. I've been invited to officially open this year's SUNDERLAND HISTORY FAIR in May and give the opening speech. Beyond honoured, beyond proud ... and just a tad nervous!

Honoured to announce I'll be speaking at this year's MORPETH BOOK FESTIVAL on Sunday 10 April at 3pm. All welcome, tickets available here.

And there's still time to order your Saint Valentine's day books and bouquets here.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

Competitions, special offers and a big bunch of roses - my writing week

This week I've been working on editing my eighth saga set in the northeast mining village of Ryhope in 1919. It's a hard slog editing your own work, especially when you know that after you submit it to the publisher, it'll come back within weeks or a couple of months and there'll be more a lot more work to be done. But all of the work is necessary to make the book as strong as it can be and it's all part of the process.

My February newsletter went out this week and it includes a competition to win a signed book and chocolates as well as a 99c offer! All details here.

My cosy crime set in Scarborough starring 12 Elvis impersonators (Twelvis!) is now available in LARGE PRINT from Ulverscroft Ltd, buy it here.

Also, during February the cosy crime is only 99c for US Kindle readers. Order it here.

Elsewhere this week, I framed a feature about my cosy crime which appeared in The Scarborough News (middle on this pic below). I keep all of my press cuttings in a file and frame full-page features like these to hang on my wall. I'm really chuffed. I've waited all of my life for this and I'm enjoying every moment.

WHSmiths Newcastle this week. I never, ever, ever, ever(*) want to get used to this, take it for granted or otherwise not be so happy that I  jump up and down and take photos each time I see my books on a shelf in a shop. (*ever).

Act 1, Scene 1. The stage is set for my new cosy crime Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel which is out in May this year and in the Bookseller's Buyer's guide to Fiction this week

Female First website have a competition to win one of two copies of Murder at the Seaview Hotel. Enter here.   They also have an article which I wrote, called 7 Fun Facts about Murder at the Seaview Hotel. Read it here.

Speaking of competitions, I'm running another competition to win a signed copy of The Miner's Lass with chocolate and bookmarks. Enter here and good luck!

This week I gave an online zoom talk for Northumbria Libraries! Not only was it very well attended online nut it was screened on the big screen at Cramlington Library too and was a huge success. Anyone who knows me will know that in the days before I was writer I'd never, ever, have had the courage and confidence to do public talks.

Speaking of public talks, I'll be appearing in person at Morpeth Book Festival on Sunday April 10 2022 at 3pm. Book your ticket now.

I popped into Waterstones Sunderland this week to sign a pile of books on my special table and felt like a rock star. Bookshop staff are the best!

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

See you next week!
