Starting, Signing, Stories, Sunderland, Saltburn & Scarborough - my writing week

A great deal has happened this week, more than usual (and I know I always have busy weeks) so let's crack on with what's been going on in my writing week this week.

Firstly, I began to write my new cosy crime, set in Scarborough. This will be the third cosy crime in the series. I began with two of the most scary words a writer can write...

I visited the gorgeous North Yorkshire seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-sea where I called into the Book Corner bookshop and signed copes of my debut cosy crime Murder at the Seaview Hotel.

And I also signed copies of my novels - cosy crime and sagas - in Sunderland Waterstones. They even have a table for my novels in the shop, which makes my heart burst with love and pride.

It's official, the leaflets are out and my name's on them all!  I've been invited to give the opening speech at this year's Sunderland History Fair.  It really is a huge honour. I'm terrified of course! All welcome, please come and say hello.

News of the History Fair was published in a full page feature in The Sunderland Echo.

I bought a copy of the new book Noteworthy Sunderland People by Trevor Thorne...

... where I'm featured right at the end (it's in alphabetical order of surname, I'm always on the end of lists, me!)

I had a short story published in Best Magazine. It was a lovely story about a woman needing to spend time on her own, called Left to her Own Devices.

And I was included in this wonderful tweet from Waterstones Scarborough who said my cosy crime set in the seaside town continues to be one of their bestsellers. Music to my ears!

I received royalties which are still trickling in for my Coronation Street fan book, A Perfect Duet. I donated this to Pancreatic Cancer UK.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

See you next week!

The Guardian, The Word, Plotting and a return to Scarborough (in my head) - my writing week

This week I've been finalising the plotting and planning of my third cosy crime set in Scarborough. I can't reveal the title or the cover yet, but I will do as soon as I can.  Now that I've finished researching over the last few weeks, and the plotting and planning are done, all I have to do now is... (takes a deep breath!) .... start writing it. And that's what I'll be doing next week.  All being well, I'll write on three mornings a week every week, although it's usually more as I tend to get carried away by the story. My first draft therefore, should be ready before the end of August. Then it's editing and tweaking and polishing and refining it before it goes to the publisher before the end of November, which is when the deadline is. Wish me luck!

Speaking of Scarborough, I received a wonderful comment from a reader about my first cosy crime - Murder at the Seaview Hotel. My books are inspiring readers to visit the locations in my books, whether it's my sagas and people are visiting Ryhope to see the locations, or to Scarborough to see the magical seaside town. Makes my heart swell with pride.

I had a wonderful chat with Gemma of Scarborough's South Cliff Gardens about arranging a book launch in Scarborough for my second cosy crime - Curtain Call at the Seaview Hotel. It'll be on Saturday 6 August from 11-1 and I'll give you all the details very soon!  All welcome!

I'm also working on a fantastic competition prize for the August paperback launch of  CURTAIN CALL AT THE SEAVIEW HOTEL, set in Scarborough. You'll be able to win overnight B&B  in Scarborough, dinner for two at Eatme cafe plus two tickets to see Brief Encounter at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Stay tuned. Better still, sign up for my monthly newsletter to ensure you don't miss out!

Also this week I had a letter printed in the Guardian. Flaming Nora! Read all about it, here.

The Word at South Shields is one of my favourite buildings in the northeast. So I'm doubly over the moon to be invited to give two sessions there on Writing for Magazines this June. Sign up now

And I was delighted to discover that I'm included in a new book of 120 most notable people in Sunderland.  As my surname begins with the letter Y and the book is arranged in alphabetical order, I'm last but by no means least! Find out about the book here.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

See you next week!

Festival, Milestone, Wishing and Hoping - my writing week

This week I gave a talk at the inaugural Morpeth Book Festival in Northumberland. It was a wonderful event, very friendly and my talk went down very well, even though I was very nervous.

Whilst in Northumberland, I visited the amazing Barter Books in Alnwick. And they had some of my books on their shelves!

During April, two of my novels are just 99p each.  Here's an offer I hope you can't refuse! I have not one, but two 99p Kindle offers for April.   Enjoy my fun, cosy crime set in Scarborough starring 12 Elvis impersonators! Murder at the Seaview Hotel - http://bit.ly/MurderAtTheSeaviewHotel  And my northeast saga set around the miners strike of 1921. The Miner's Lass -  http://bit.ly/TheMinersLass

Great meeting today with Hype That PR who'll be managing publicity for two of my paperback novels coming out this year with Headline Fiction. Hang on to your hats, it's going to be a busy year!

Also this week I wrote episode 300 of my weekly soap opera, Riverside, for The People's Friend magazine. What a milestone! And what a celebratory episode it'll be.

It's still not too late to enter my competition to win a book of your choice and some chocolate and bookmarks. Enter here.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

Research, book festival and VIP parking - my writing week

My author newsletter for April went out this week. It includes two 99p offers, a competition, a cover reveal and details of how you can be a part of the story of one of my novels.  It's all in my author newsletter for April, online now

This week the new tax year started. I know, how dull!  But to cheer myself up I started off the year with some lovely pink files, matching of course. It's a small thing, but a colourful one that helps with the drudgery of keeping records and receipts and putting them on all spreadsheets at the end of the year. It's a hugely important part of being a self-employed writer.

It's still not too late to enter my competition to win a book of your choice and some chocolate and bookmarks. Enter here.

This week I continued researching for the book I'll write next. This will be my third cosy crime / murder mystery set in Scarborough. I can't reveal the title or cover just yet but I will do as soon as I'm able. I took myself off to the library at Sunderland University to sit in peace and quiet (and it's wi-fi free so no distractions).  I'm an alumni member of Sunderland University, it's where I studied journalism as a (very) mature student and as an alumni, I'm allowed to use the library and other facilities. It's a joy.

This Sunday, 10th April at 3pm I'll be speaking about historical sagas and cosy crimes at Morpeth Book Festival. I've been preparing all week for it and have even bought a new frock!  Buy your ticket here.

Here's an offer I hope you can't refuse! I have not one, but two 99p Kindle offers for April.   Enjoy my fun, cosy crime set in Scarborough starring 12 Elvis impersonators! Murder at the Seaview Hotel - http://bit.ly/MurderAtTheSeaviewHotel  And my northeast saga featuring bare knuckle fighting set around the miners strike of 1921. The Miner's Lass -  http://bit.ly/TheMinersLass

I had a fantastic time opening the spring book fair at Whitburn Community Library today. I even had my own VIP parking space ...and I don't even drive! Wonderful people.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.
