Chocolate and Guinness cake

The chocolate and Guinness cake was an unqualified success. Why is it I can bake very well indeed - but can't cook? I'll get around to posting up the recipe soon but it came from the Green & Blacks chocolate recipe book which I highly recommend.

And for fans of The Sound of Music, seeing the London stage show is a must. I've loved the film since I was a little girl when I was bought the original soundtrack on LP and taken to the flicks to see Julie Andrews many, many times, with my grandma. Aoife, the Irish Maria from the telly show, did a sterling job of being Connie Fisher doing Maria, but the Mother Superior wasn't a patch on the one in the film.

My favourite line in that film is actually spoken by an extra - one of the servants in Captain Von Trapp's house, handing out food at a party:
"More strudel, herr?"

Classic camp stuff.

Researching for my novel Pearl of Pit Lane I spent the day at Beamish Museum on a clippy mat workshop. And if you're wondering what a clippy mat is, it's also known as a proggy mat or a rag rug. The BBC puts it like this: Proggy mats were a common sight in working-class homes in the North East of England until the mid-20th Century. Made from old sacks and recycled fabric they were an economical option to keep feet warm and toasty in an era before fitted carpets were the norm. I remember my grandma had proggy mats in her house and I also remember her making them, but I was never interested back then in learning how to make my own. As Ione of my characters in my novel makes proggy mats, I could have read about how to make them or even watched on YouTube, I wanted to discover for myself what the process felt like, smelt like, sounded like.
