Red feather. Proof copies. My week in writing so far #amwriting

Image
An exciting week so far. Today I started work on chapter two of my third (and as yet untitled) novel.  Well, I say it's untitled but I have a title in my head, a working title, that enscapsulates what the book is about to me. And yes, it involves the red feather. The title of the book may well be changed as the months go on and the story takes a life of its own. Also this week, the proof copies of my debut novel Belle of the Back Streets arrived. Apologies for the blurred image, above. I promise that I'm better at writing than I am at taking photos! And I've been given a nod in The Northern Echo as they report on the ten shortlisted winners of the Ryedale Book Festival short story competition. You can read it all here. Beautiful Bookmarks

Image
My new bookmarks have just arrived and I'm buzzing with excitement. Honestly, I can't sit still and believe me I've tried.  With thanks to my friend, the wonderful illustrator @PickledJo on twitter, who helped put the bookmarks together as design is something I'm rather rubbish at. The bookmarks have the images of the first two of my three novels on the front. You can find out more at my website glendayoungbooks.com If anyone would like one of the bookmarks, send me a message to glenda.sunderland@gmail.com and I'll pop one in the post to you. Clippy Mat Making at Beamish

Image
Researching for my novel Pearl of Pit Lane I spent the day at Beamish Museum on a clippy mat workshop. And if you're wondering what a clippy mat is, it's also known as a proggy mat or a rag rug. The BBC puts it like this: Proggy mats were a common sight in working-class homes in the North East of England until the mid-20th Century. Made from old sacks and recycled fabric they were an economical option to keep feet warm and toasty in an era before fitted carpets were the norm. I remember my grandma had proggy mats in her house and I also remember her making them, but I was never interested back then in learning how to make my own. As Ione of my characters in my novel makes proggy mats, I could have read about how to make them or even watched on YouTube, I wanted to discover for myself what the process felt like, smelt like, sounded like. And so I booked myself on to a workshop at Beamish Museum, a place I love to visit. There were six of us on the proggy mat workshop...

Two short stories in this week's People's Friend magazine

Image
I've two short stories in this week's The People's Friend magazine. The first one has made it to the cover of the magazine too, which makes me very happy indeed and mighty proud too.  It's a comedy story called Stood Up! And the second story is called The Photo Booth. It made me cry when I wrote it and I've just read it again in the magazine and I'm crying all over again. Also in the magazine is another fun edition of my weekly soap opera, Riverside. Find out more about me and my books at: Glenda Young Books I'm on Twitter @flaming_nora and Instagram @flaming_nora
