Back in the Spotlight

Image
I have a short story in this week's edition of The People's Friend magazine. It's a story about a TV actor invited to attend a cast reunion - but why doesn't he want to go?  This is my third story published by The People's Friend, and this one's called Back in the Spotlight.  It's illustrated by Jim Dewar, and it is exactly as I imagined the main character to be when I was writing the story.  As much as I love watching Coronation Street and writing about it , my foray into writing for women’s magazines is very important to me.  Having spent much of my writing life writing about Corrie, a TV show – in effect, telling someone else’s story – it’s a huge, enjoyable challenge to now write my own stories.  To have my short stories accepted and published in a magazine like The Friend is quite wonderful indeed.  You might like to read my interview on the Woman's Magazine writers blog . Seaglass story in The People's Friend magazine

Image
I've a story about seaglass collecting in The People's Friend Fiction Special  No. 123 , on sale today.  I've collected seaglass for years and have been doing so since I was a child, on and off. I throw most of it back to the sea but the little gems, I keep.  I tweet some of my seaglas finds at @SunSeaGlassArt The short story I submitted to People's Friend magazine is my first one ever to have been accepted for publication. However, it's not the first of my short stories to be published by them, such are the workings of the magazine world.  It's a story I'm very proud of, like all of my writing work. I submitted it under the title of The Seaglass Collector but as you can see, the title has been changed to best suit the magazine, and it's now called A Lasting Love . I'm particularly fond of the artwork that accompanies my story, it's exactly what I had in my head when I was writing. If you buy the Ficton Special, I hope you enjoy read...

Sutton Bank

Image
Settling down today to watch cycling on the telly as Le Tour de Yorkshire follows the route of one of my favourite journies.  It's the route between Middlesbrough and Scarborough. Regular readers will know how fond I am of Scarbados! Anyway, one of the climbs that the cyclists will be doing today is the climb up Sutton Bank. It's a tough one to do in a car, never mind on bike. One summer, when we were kids, my dad hired a car to drive us to Scarborough. We couldn't afford a car of our own at the time, so he used to hire a brand new car when they were released each August for our two weeks holiday. Off we set in our brand new hire car in August en route to Scarborough for our summer holidays. Dad was driving. Mam was in the passenger seat popping a mint imperial into dad's mouth every now and then as he gripped the steering wheel and navigated the bends and turns of the A19. Dad turned the car off the A19, the brand new hire car he was so chuffed to bits with. ...
