A very Specials post

When I saw the news online today, I thought it must have beenan April fool. I'm still jittery, 'cos it appears to be true.

The Specials are getting back together and touring later this year. I've been waiting for this to happen for about, oh, 20 years.

How much more excitement can a girl take? The B52s releasing their first album in 16 years and now this. I think I need to go for a lie down.

I'm given to understand that Jerry Dammers will be giving this one a miss. So it's a bit like the MGs without Booker T.

Or possibly Fun Boy 3 with a really good rhythm section.

Ghost Town - still an absolute belter. Terry Hall actually lived for a while in my home town a few years back. Top bloke.

Why is Jerry Dammers giving it a miss? i'm gutted. Still, won't be a million per cent disappointed now if I can't get a ticket, just a bit less.

Researching for my novel Pearl of Pit Lane I spent the day at Beamish Museum on a clippy mat workshop. And if you're wondering what a clippy mat is, it's also known as a proggy mat or a rag rug. The BBC puts it like this: Proggy mats were a common sight in working-class homes in the North East of England until the mid-20th Century. Made from old sacks and recycled fabric they were an economical option to keep feet warm and toasty in an era before fitted carpets were the norm. I remember my grandma had proggy mats in her house and I also remember her making them, but I was never interested back then in learning how to make my own. As Ione of my characters in my novel makes proggy mats, I could have read about how to make them or even watched on YouTube, I wanted to discover for myself what the process felt like, smelt like, sounded like.
