Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray

To the ballet this week to see Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray. It was good stuff indeed but it didn't blow me away in that way Matthew Bourne's ballets have done in the past.

Eating ice-cream in the interval we spotted Oz Clarke from the telly sharing a bag of crisps with a woman. There was also a poster inviting punters to sign up to become a Friend of Matthew which I suspect is a little like being a Friend of Dorothy but with much nicer shoes.

I read about that production and fancied seeing it myself. So it was only good - not excellent? Worth seeing? How much were the tickets?

"A Friend of Matthew", ha ha. I wonder what THAT entails...

OC - it's definitely worth going to see but I read online that it's completely sold out. If you haven't yet seen Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands - go and see it. It's on at Sadlers Wells for Christmas and is AMAZING.

Researching for my novel Pearl of Pit Lane I spent the day at Beamish Museum on a clippy mat workshop. And if you're wondering what a clippy mat is, it's also known as a proggy mat or a rag rug. The BBC puts it like this: Proggy mats were a common sight in working-class homes in the North East of England until the mid-20th Century. Made from old sacks and recycled fabric they were an economical option to keep feet warm and toasty in an era before fitted carpets were the norm. I remember my grandma had proggy mats in her house and I also remember her making them, but I was never interested back then in learning how to make my own. As Ione of my characters in my novel makes proggy mats, I could have read about how to make them or even watched on YouTube, I wanted to discover for myself what the process felt like, smelt like, sounded like.
