I think it depends on what you hum. Something classical, possibly with baton waving gestures, is quite classy and acceptable. Humming the Muppet or Woody the Woodpecker theme can attract whispered comments and much tutting.
I go for something middle of the road. "Knowing Me, Knowing You" has the right weight and is very knowing. A real no, no is anything by Radiohead.
I find Robbie Williams' Millennium very hummable and as it's nearly Christmas - I'm tending to hum Rudolf the red nosed reindeer on a daily basis.
My friend "the Brain" says she hums and sings not only when she is happy, but also when she is feeling down. It cheers her up.
Why it bugs so many people, I can't understand. As long as you can carry a tune, what's it to 'em?
