Headline has acquired three new sagas by Glenda Young, each featuring factory girls from Sunderland in the early 1900s.
Clare Foss acquired world English language rights from Caroline Sheldon and Safae El-Ouahabi at RCW. The first book in the deal, The Bakery Girls, tells the tale of how the famous Sunderland pink slice was first created, and will be published in 2027.
Foss said: "We’re thrilled to be publishing Glenda’s mesmerising sagas, which have captured the hearts of over half a million readers. Glenda’s talent for storytelling is matched by her ability to create strong and engaging characters and gripping plots that are rich in historical detail.
"The Toffee Factory Girls trilogy has been such a huge success, and we’re delighted that Glenda will now be taking us into the world of cake-baking and the creation of Sunderland’s famous pink slice!"
Young said: "I’m over the moon! The Bakery Girls will be my 12th saga and my 17th novel published by Headline, and I’m delighted to be signing with them again. I’m passionate about highlighting working-class women’s history and bringing it to the page in my gripping sagas."
Sheldon added: "I am thrilled Glenda Young’s readers have a new treat in store – a saga with all the trademark qualities of her writing: compelling plotline, brilliant evocation of place and time and grit and warmth in equal measure."
As well as writing sagas, Young is also the author of the Scarborough-based Helen Dexter mystery series (also Headline), which was shortlisted for the New Kid on the Block Award for Best New Series in the Dead Good Reader Awards. She has also written official TV tie-in books for ITV’s Coronation Street and runs two international fan websites for the show.
In 2026, the author will celebrate 10 years writing a weekly soap opera called Riverside for The People’s Friend magazine. She also sponsors a creative writing student at the University of Sunderland and her donation to Sunderland Women’s Centre will launch a new creative writing class there in 2026.
