Coronation Street Weekly Update, May 30 2011

I've been writing Coronation Street weekly updates since 1995 and this week's Coronation Street update has just gone live here.

This might just be the week when I fall out of love with Corrie.

Scarborough Fair

Just back from a long weekend camping in a field near Filey. One of the many highlights was the visit to the Scarborough Fair collection of fairground rides, mechanical organs, steam engines and vintage and miniature vehicles.  It's real gem of a place, set in the Flower of May campsite on the road between Scarborough and Filey and it's only open on Bank Holidays.  Well worth a visit. Have a look at their website at http://www.scarboroughfaircollection.com/

Middlesbrough - it's really not that bad

Just back from a smashing day out in Middlesbrough.  It's a town I've not visited in my adult life although I vaguely remember being dragged there on the train for a day's shopping by my mother when I was kid.  Anyway, it's a surprisingly nice place and well worth a visit.

We took in MIMA - Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, a walk around the very pleasant town centre and a dodge out to the Transporter Bridge, the largest one in the world. For 70p each way, per person, we travelled back and forth across the Tees and went into the visitor centre too. A walk around the Middlehaven area, currently being regenerated, was well worth a look, taking in Middlesbrough FC's Riverside Stadium and the stunning Anish Kapoor's world's largest public art project.

Mind you, it wasn't all good. We were taken by surprise walking around the town centre when a voice boomed out of loud speakers on the main street telling us we were being watched by CCTV.  So, there's still a way to go to revitalise the town centre totally but if you're in the area, Middlesbrough is well worth a look.

It's really not that bad. In fact, it's rather nice.

I've created a photo album from our visit today, have a look at it here.

Things you see by the sea

Every run along the beach is different every time. The tide churns up stones and drops them, different stones, different sizes, different tides. There's big stones and small stones, sea glass and sea coal, drifts of sea coal, tiny fragments of black on the pure yellow sand.  There's sea weed, always sea weed, always left by the tide in the same spot on the beach right by the cliff.  A tractor today, a man with a lucky job, working for the council, scooping up the sea weed in the tractor's heavy  bucket, carrying it back to the shore, giving it back to the sea.

If I run early enough, the beach is almost deserted  now the dog walkers are banned on the central sands over the summer and instead walk on the fringes, dogs running straight to the sea, chasing balls, chasing their tails, never barking, never growling, loving the space, the light and the air, the water, as much as their owners, the runners, the joggers, the bare back horse riders who only ever appear very early on a morning splashing through the shallows.  And there's more at the shore. The bride and her groom having  photographs taken against the sea and sand backdrop before the day trippers arrive and the ice-cream van comes.
